Students Walking and Talking

STEP (IN-CLASS TUTOR) PROGRAM

The STEP Program is a support service provided by the Academic Resource Center. STEP Leaders, who are successful college students, work with instructors in specific courses to provide supplemental practice and direction for students. Before ever stepping foot in the Library and Academic Resource Center, students enrolled in a course with a STEP Leader receive guidance throughout the semester. In addition to providing assistance in the classroom, STEP Leaders host one-on-one consultations with students in the tutoring labs. This personalized kind of academic coaching and peer mentorship has proven effects on the success, retention and persistence of students.

“I really want to avoid [acting as a teacher] because some students build a wall up. They’re more free if I’m more of a student, just like them”
